The guest speaker that we had on Friday's class was the best speaker yet that has came to talk to the class. It was easy to relate to her becuase for one, she is around our age and she attended and graduated the same school that we go to now. I really liked her attitude because she was funny and honest about her experiences. She was also helpful because she taught me about internships and being tenacious at something. Her advice and tips were helpful and it was easy to listen and pay attention to her because she had interesting stories, pictures and events to share.
I learned that getting your resume out to as many people as possible can result in being an intern or even getting a job. Hearing her experience as an intern, it encouraged me and made me feel more comfortable about getting into an internship and what I would expect to be doing. I also learned that being a CARS major doesnt just mean that you have to work directly with clothing and there are other jobs to work in.

My Opinion on Sweatshops
I'm not really sure about where I stand right now with sweatshops. I've never really thought about them or took time to analyze the good and bad about them. I think that the conditions of sweatshops are horrible and the workers shouldn't be treated that way. But when it comes down to if I am for or against sweatshops, I think I would have to say that I am for them.
I feel that it's wrong for me to support sweatshops but at the same time the decisions I make as far as apparel is opposite. When I go shopping, I don't think about where or how each of the garments are made and I know that I'm not the only one. When I go shopping, all I worry about is getting the nicest looking clothes for a low price because I am a true bargain shopper. I've heard the question many times of would I consider paying more for my clothes if I knew they were being made the right way and not in sweatshops. By being a bargain shopper, I absolutely hate paying alot of money for clothes so I wouldn't want to spend alot or more money. Maybe if i was financially fortunate and could afford to spend money frivously, then yes I would pay more for clothes. But I don't have that advantage so I always shop in the clearance section of stores.
Hearing the discussion in class, I think I would be for the idea of sweatshops, but against the conditions of sweatshops. Those are the only jobs that the workers are able to get and they do it in order to survive and provide for theirselves and families. Being raised by a single mother I've experienced my mother taking on many different jobs in order to provide for my sister and I. As far as how the workers are treated, there should be reasonable length breaks, and there should be some types of benefits for them. Its hard to say what could be done to improve sweatshops becuase nobody wants to pay more for clothing but how do you keep the clothes cheap and treat the workers fair at the same time?

Art & Usability of Milan fashion week
As everyone knows the Milan fashion week is always the fashion week to look forward to. They're the fashion week where you expect the unexpected but at the same time know that all the designs are going to be daring and over the top.
The desgins that I saw in Milan's fashion week was all about shape, sillhouette, color, and eyecatching textures. A real great example of art that I found was D&G's collection. Their designs were based on the sea and a had sailor-type theme. The garments all had the white, red and navy colors that are known to be associated with sailors and they also had the cute sailboat and anchor emblems on the clothes as well. The collection had a boyish yet femenine look to it by having loose fitting clothes but they were loose in all the right places and had certain tweaks to them that made them sexy at the same time. Then towards the end of the collection, the clothes became more extravagant with alot of gold, more patterns, and parts of the garment that blossomed out.
I think all the designers did a great job of taking something that everyone is familiar with, using it as a theme to base their clothes off of, but then twisting it in their own artistic way by going beyond the theme and adding onto it. That way when we as an audience look at their collection, we have a sense of the theme, but at the same time we can't pinpoint it because there is so many different ways to analyze the garments.

Source of Inspiration
I did sketch clothes by hand at one time but then I stopped. I didn't have a urge to continue to draw anymore but I might start back up just for fun. But when i did draw I felt like my inspiration came from everything that I seen around me including my own imagination. When I drew I thought about everything from shapes to nature. I would think about unordinary shapes and angle them differently then incorporate it into whatever type of garment I drew. Sometimes I would think of ocean water and create a dress that I imagine would flow like waves in the ocean. Some of my inspiration also came from clothes that I've seen on celebrities or desginer clothes that I would see on the internet or in magazines. I would think about what caught my eye and mesh it all together into one garment that I thought would visually show the inspiration but at the same time not be a duplicate of what has already been done.
My inspiration basically comes from everthing and not one specific thing and I feel like that would create a good sketch of a garment. I haven't sketched a garment in about two years but taking this class is pushing me to start sketching again.

NY Fashion week trends
I really enjoyed looking at the videos and pictures from this year's fashion week. I've never really taken time out before to look at the other ones but I really like what I've seen from this year. It's exciting for me to see all the different designers with these varieties of patterns, fabrics, textures and silhouettes is amazing. The talent of these desginers are amazing, and the product of their great ideas are even better.
One of my favorite collections that I saw was the one from Marc Jacobs. His style of design is genius to me. He uses many colors and knows just how to put them together just right. I feel like the clothes are setting off a new trend of its own because he used everything that's popular in fashion and put it all together in one outfit. The collection also has a modern day Mary Poppins look to it.

Another designer whose collection I ejoyed was Zac Posen. The majority of his collection were dresses, long and short of all types. I think of the the designs as sexy night-out-on-the-town garments. Some of the clothes are frilly and flowy and others are close fitted pencil skirt desgins. The main colors of the fabrics all seem to be around beige, off white, silver, tan and black. The whole collection has a elegant yet sassy look to them and I like that.

One more designer that I liked was Nicole Miller. The prints and patterns in her collection was inspired by voodoo. Although that seems wierd her ideas worked with the clothes that were majority strecth silk and stemming from menswear. Her collection to me looks to have a vintage look with a cultural twist to it.
(Marcio Madeira, 2008)Below is a video on Oscar de la Renta's 2009 collection. His collection was another that I liked because of his range of clothes that go from years ago to modern day fashions that anybody regardless of age can wear and enjoy.

Environmental Friendly Clothes
I don't know much about organic and eco-friendly clothing,
just the basics of it being better for the environment. I am aware that eco-friendly clothing
helps the environment by reducing pollution so we can live safely and healthy.
With research I found out that the fabric from these types of clothes
are made from leftover cuttings of fabric from clothing factories. Then from there
the leftovers are sorted based on their colors and shades which is where they get
their color from. No dyes or bleach is added to the fabrics. (EcoGear, 2008)
Below I posted a chart that shows the comparison of how three different fabrics
including the eco-friendly fabric is made.
I think that eco-friendly clothing is a smart and good idea. I would buy their clothes
to support cleaning up the environment but locating them is inconvenience because
they're not sold in regular stores. But I am not against the idea of eco-friendly clothes
because I am all for making the world a better place and preventing people from trashing it.

Favorite Designer

My favorite designer is Donna Karan because her designs are so diverse and they target more than one type of person. Her collection of apparel ranges from everyday casual to seasonal runway. Even though her line is mostly for women, she creates clothes for men and juniors along with shoes, and accessories. Nothing in her collection is too ridiculous to the point where it would only be seen worn on the runway. But at the same time her clothes are different in thier own way and can still be worn for any occcasion.
Donna Karan's line DKNY (Donna Karen New York) can be found in any store ranging from Saks Fifth to Macy's and even in Ross. DKNY is mainly exspensive but some of her clothes are affordable and that's one of the reasons why I like her as a designer. She doesn't just market wealthy people and make clothes available for them, she reaches all demographics. I myself know I can't afford Donna Karan's high end clothing. But by her clothes being in department stores, I own a pair of DKNY skinny jeans and they're my favorite pair of jeans that I like to wear. And I think it's cool that I can wear my favorite designer's clothing and not many people can say that about their favorite designers.
Below is a link of the New York fashion website that shows Donna Karan's three latest collections for 2009 (DKNY Resort, Donna Karan & Donna Karan Gold) as well as backstage photos.
